“I like how the firm promotes learning – from Lunch n’ Learns to KMB U – I really enjoy that. It’s helpful to hone and refresh my skills. It really connects you to the team.”

Meet the Team | Sara

With a desire to continually learn and evolve in the craft of architecture, Sara Rickards is a great fit at KMB architects. She appreciates her colleagues’ willingness to share their experience and expertise, so she can grow her skill set, while also being quick to offer her perspective and creativity in support of their needs.

From an early age, Sara was interested in architecture. The niece of an architect, she spent summers with her uncle in Southern California, learning about the practice. She was enamored by the creative process involved in the design and construction of a building.

“I was drawn to floor plans. I’d buy magazines full of floor plans and just look through them, and then visualize what those plans would look like once built.”

Sara cites healthcare design as a passion, and she is inspired by the evolving trend towards less institutional design. She seeks to create emotionally supportive spaces for patients, while ensuring that medical providers have facilities that allow them to effectively provide care. To inform this approach, Sara seeks input from doctors, nurses, and other providers to understand how the staff and patients will use their spaces, and how design can enhance those experiences.

Outside of work, Sara continues to put her creativity into practice, refinishing and repurposing furniture and crocheting. She spends time with her family, including her two little girls and two dogs – a Boston Terrier and the family’s “mystery black dog.”
