South Correctional Institution East Dorm, Idaho Department of Corrections

$0.00

Location: Kuna, ID

Project Completion: 2023

Project Description:

KMB recently completed a new 152 bed capacity inmate facility for the Idaho Department of Corrections at the South Idaho Correctional Institution campus. KMB oversaw the programming and planning and served as the design architect and corrections expert. The project was completed in conjunction with Hummel Architects and Hoffman Construction. Four tiers of quad sleeping rooms are arranged over two wings on two floors. Each tier has a dayroom and associated restrooms. Each of the four tiers is designed with flexibility to provide either direct or indirect supervision pending the classifications of the population and staffing availability.

The program is a stepped, or level, program with greater amenities provided for the first-floor tiers over the second-floor tiers including independent use of laundry and kitchenette facilities. The facility is meant to prepare residents for reentry to the community by delivering an environment to build independent living skills and provide training opportunities. Amenities, programs spaces, and the design reflect the restorative justice philosophy of the Idaho Department of Corrections. Color, graphics, and acoustics are important to the client to provide a normative environment for residents.
