Jason Barry
Community-focused. Detail-oriented. Listener.
Design professional Jason Barry is passionate about improving communities through healthcare design. Whether he’s working on a hospital renovation, a behavioral health facility, a community jail or a tribal wellness clinic, his desire to understand the varying needs of the people who will use the space — from housekeeping, maintenance, and security to nurses, doctors, and patients — underpins his approach to programming and design.
“I get to help my community at the healthcare level. If I help a hospital with their operating room, there’s the potential for hundreds of thousands of lives to be saved, or an X-ray room will see thousands of patients. At the end of the day, I know that I’m helping our community live better lives.”
Jason’s passion to deliver results is fueled by lived experience in healthcare environments from both a patient and provider perspective. Jason spent many years navigating medical facilities while caring for his mother, and his wife works in a hospital emergency room. This gives him a special perspective towards understanding his client’s goals and the “why” behind the work, which Jason always shares with his team to ensure alignment and mutual understanding.
Jason finds the practice of architecture exciting and relishes in the details of materials schedules, specifications, and contracts. He is extremely knowledgeable about REVIT given the many complex healthcare renovations he’s completed where existing systems and new systems must be carefully planned to avoid conflicts in the field. He particularly enjoys the schematic design phase where he can use his experience and creativity to reimagine existing spaces to be more functional.
“I draw inspiration from my past experience, and a lot of that comes from listening to staff — from the person in housekeeping who changes the sheets and mops the floors, to the security guard who needs to prevent a patient from leaving, to my wife in the bullpen at the ER. I listen to the opinions of staff for safety and security measures. I listen to facilities directors. I listen to how the facilities function, why they function that way, and look for ways that we can help.”
Jason finds the diversity of projects at KMB architects rewarding, with the mix allowing him to apply his expertise to innovative private projects, as well as to essential healthcare facilities needed in the public sector such as detox centers in prisons and nursing stations at psychiatric hospitals. This allows Jason to stretch and expand his skills to continue serving clients effectively while gaining an understanding of new sectors from his colleagues.
