Brian Little | Associate
Negotiator. Educator. Detail-oriented.
Brian Little is a seasoned project manager and the code expert at KMB architects. Brian’s appreciation for the importance of a strong command of code implications began early in his architectural career and deepened during his tenure working as the Plans Examiner for the City of Aberdeen and the Building Official for City of Hoquiam. Detail-oriented and resourceful, Brian shares his knowledge with each team and maintains volumes of code resources to inform the work of the firm.
“I’m interested in how we can execute a project. Pulling a permit is a negotiation. When I sit at a table with a client and designers, I’m sitting there representing a party that’s not present. How can we permit this and strike the balance with a sound basis in the codes?”
With a passion for design informed from 31 years’ practicing architecture, Brian is a frequent contributor on the firm’s public works projects. He performs as senior project manager on a wide variety and diverse selection of projects, from reroofing work for school districts, to remodels and life safety studies for the Department of Corrections, to construction administration. He enjoys the mentorship opportunities that come with being an associate and is constantly looking for ways to help the team by sharing resources and offering advice.
“I have a deep institutional knowledge of projects. I collect the information, but more importantly, I make sure everybody in the firm knows the reference materials are available.”
Growing up in Grays Harbor County, Brian always knew he wanted to be an architect, and he pursued a career that exposed him to various aspects of the practice. He graduated from WSU after a stint in carpentry and returned to Aberdeen to join a local architecture firm, Alan Gozart AIA Architects and Planners. Brian led the firm in the adoption of computer technology and was instrumental in their success. He then moved onto the agency side, where he spent time as the Plans Examiner for the City of Aberdeen and the Building Official for the City of Hoquiam before starting his own firm for a period of time. Brian likes to say he’s designed everything from food trucks to multi-million-dollar residences, but his true passion is the public works projects that he specializes in at KMB architects.
“I really enjoy the mentoring aspect of my position. I’m surprised I didn’t become a teacher. I find that the production staff are coming to the firm with the technology background, but less architectural knowledge, so I mentor and educate them. It’s one of the biggest delights in this stage of my career.”
As a native of Aberdeen, Brian is active in the community of Grays Harbor County. His civic duties have included serving on the Planning Commission, Shoreline Hearing Board, and Board of Adjustment for the City of Aberdeen. Come November, you may find Brian decked in pirate garb and leading the charge of the annual Thanksgiving water balloon fight between Aberdeen and Hoquiam.
