“Mentoring staff is enjoyable. I enjoy developing relationships with new team members, letting them know they always have a resource in the office to see about design or questions about the firm.”

Meet the Team | Adam

Many describe Associate Adam Herrick as the “yes man” around the office. If anybody needs insight and guidance in corrections design, roofing design, materials, or systems, Adam is always willing to help. His expertise is a huge asset to KMB architects’ and our clients. In fact, many of our Washington State Department of Corrections (DOC) clients consider Adam their go-to resource for drawings, as-builts, and building systems knowledge to backfill institutional knowledge as they experience staff turnover. He is often called on to provide his resident expertise for the Washington State Penitentiary, Monroe Correctional Complex, and Clallam Bay Corrections Center. He fills a similar role for the Washington State Department of Social and Health Services (DSHS) for Western State Hospital and the Child Study & Treatment Center.

“I’m particularly proud of the Support Building at the Washington State Penitentiary in Walla Walla. We worked with 35 stakeholders at WSP over a one-year period to develop the program, which includes a GED program, arts and crafts, and a library. With a tight timeframe for design, and a tight budget, the change order percentage for this project, which was under construction for a year and a half, was just 0.75%.”

Adam is also KMB architects’ resident expert on roofing design, with experience spanning several million square feet of roof replacements throughout his career. Adam is always open to collaboration and willing to help his colleagues determine the best approach for this important element of the building envelope. For his largest roof replacement –85,000-SF for the Department of Ecology Headquarters in Lacey – Adam explored environmentally friendly and sustainable options in service of the agency’s environmental protection mission.

Thanks to his helpful disposition, Adam took easily to his mentoring responsibilities as a firm associate. He co-leads career development and continuing education with fellow associate Elizabeth Glenn.

Away from the office, Adam snow skis, races his motorcycle at several off-road events around the Northwest, and cheers on the Seattle Seahawks. As a die-hard 12, Adam attends as many Seahawks games as possible – including 13 road games so far. His favorite stadium, besides Century Link Field, of course, has been Arrowhead Stadium in Kansas City. And where did he receive his worst treatment as an opposing fan? Football junkies won’t be surprised to hear it was at the notorious Oakland Coliseum in 1997.
